Oral Language -
Through the Phases

This workshop is suitable for classroom teachers, teacher aides, SENCO, LSCs and ESOL teachers.

The oral language workshop is suitable for all teachers, teaching at Phases 1-3 of Te Mātaiaho.

Course content:

  • Te Mātaiaho – focusing on the oral language strand

  • How does oral language develop over time?

  • How can we assess oral language?

  • Embedding oral language throughout the curriculum

  • Building vocabulary

  • Developing oral language competence of English Language Learners

  • Practical strategies that work!

New to ESOL

This workshop is specifically designed for leaders and teachers who have limited experience and knowledge of second language acquisition, how to access ESOL funding, set up programmes for English Language Learners and the key resources.

It will cover:

  • Enrolment procedures to identify ELLs

  • ESOL funding entitlements and procedures

  • Using the ESOL funding appropriately

  • ELLP Pathway or ELLP matrices - which one should you use?

  • Key resources for working with English Language Learners

  • Setting up and effective ESOL programme.

  • Leaders with responsibility for English Language Learners

  • ESOL teachers

  • SENCOs/Learning Support Co-ordinators

Workshop 1:
Supporting brand new learners of English

We have noticed that a number of schools are enrolling students who are recent migrants to Aotearoa and have minimal English.

Teachers are not sure where to start and how to best support these learners.

This online workshop is suitable for anyone working with students who are beginning to learn English in the mainstream.

This workshop covers:

  • What's important for students at early Foundation Stage of the English Language Learning Progressions?

  • What type of support programmes to these learners need?

  • How to support them in both mainstream classrooms and ESOL programmes.

  • Where do we start and what vocabulary needs to be explicitly taught?

  • Resources that are available to teachers

  • Practical strategies to use with these learners.

Workshop 2:
Teaching vocabulary explicitly

A workshop for ALL teachers.

It is not just our English Language Learners who need to develop a wide vocabulary.

Vocabulary is a crucial aspect of language development for all ākonga in any language learning medium.

This workshop covers:

  • Why is developing a wide vocabulary so important?

  • What are the essential aspects of 'knowing a word'?

  • Which words do we need to teach explicitly?

  • How do we seamlessly include explicit vocabulary teaching across the curriculum?

A range of practical strategies for teaching vocabulary across the curriculum will also be part of the workshop.
